The last couple of years have been strong with hugely popular and successful video games. From Baldur’s Gate 3 to Belatro, video games have been excellent and 2025 looks to be no different. I have written about what are shaping up to be the top 10 video games of 2025. Now remember this is just my opinion. Some games may have been overshadowed by the others hence why they don’t appear on this list. Or, in my opinion, are less likely to be released in 2025. I have also written these in no particular order. So, let’s get into what we’re all here for…games!
GTA VI
As this will probably be the biggest video game of 2025 I figured why not begin with GTA VI. It has been a long time coming, especially since its predecessor came out in 2013. The game centres on Lucia, a newly escaped convict in Leonida (a fictional version of Florida) with her male partner. For fans of the series, this will also mean a return to the fan favourite Vice City (a fictional Miami). I’m looking forward to this setting given how tongue-in-cheek and satirical GTA V was.
It recently won Most Wanted Game at the recent Gold Joystick Awards which wasn’t surprising.
A marked change in the series is that Lucia will be GTA’s first prominent female protagonist. I know there were 2D female avatars in GTA 1 & 2 but I’m not counting those. I like the fresh take that GTA VI seems to be taking with Lucia while fully expecting to keep all the aspects fans love from GTA V & GTA Online. Why mess with success after all? There is no official date yet but GTA VI has a window of Q3/Q4 for PS5 & Xbox Series S/X.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Another game in a franchise following its wildly successful predecessor, MH Wilds takes place in a new open-world setting. Not much is known about the plot yet although it does take place in the unexplored Forbidden Lands. You and the other monster hunters’ purpose here is to solve the mystery of the missing expedition while working to protect the balance of the ecosystem. Encountering new monsters and hunting them across several different biomes in this harsh environment. All the while using the resources gathered to aid in your mission.
MH Wilds takes the features of MH: World such as weapons and online co-op while building on them with new features/options. I haven’t played much of the series myself but they are great-looking games with a wide and passionate fanbase. It has an early game release of 2025, coming on February 28th on Windows, PS5 & Xbox Series S/X.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach
Death Stranding 2 is the direct sequel to the 2019 game and is Hideo Kojima’s second game since departing Konami and going independent. All we know so far is the game takes place years after Death Stranding with Sam Porter Bridges, Fragile and Higgs returning as well as some new voices including actress Elle Fanning.
I’m not sure what to expect from the game but I’m sure it will have amazing visual and audio design. I remember playing the original thinking it was Norman Reedus as a post-apocalyptic mailman but the open-world and rich story kept me engaged. Death Stranding 2: On The Beach so far has no release window except for some point in 2025 for the PS5.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond
It has been a long time coming but Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is the direct sequel to 2007’s Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. It has had its development issues with starting over from Bandai Namco to Retro Studios and seems stronger for it. Announcements and the showcase trailer see Beyond as a first-person adventure compared to the side scroller you may expect.
I admit the Metroid series is the franchise I know the least about from the list but it seems like taking the series and Samus in an interesting new direction while having ties to the previous games. There’s no specific release window yet but Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be coming to Nintendo Switch in 2025 (possibly the Switch 2 depending on official announcements).
Doom: The Dark Ages
With quite a few sequels on the list of 2025 games, I wanted to shout out a prequel, Doom: The Dark Ages. Not too much is known currently but it does take place a long time before Doom (2016) in a techno-fantasy setting. It is a given there will be chaos as the Doom Slayer blasts away and carves through the countless demons they encounter but I am interested in seeing the anti-hero’s origins. Also shifting from sci-fi to fantasy to explore the lore & characters introduced in Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal.
Like quite a few games on this list, Doom: The Dark Ages has no set date yet but hopefully we’ll have one to share with you soon. However, we do know it will be released on PS5 as well as Windows and Xbox Series S/X. A somewhat surprising act for Microsoft to not pursue exclusivity!
Ghost of Yōtei
A standalone sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is an original story place 300 years later. Atsu takes up the moniker of Ghost as part of her quest for vengeance. We know so far it is still set in Feudal Japan around Mount Yōtei in Hokkaido. Elements like combat seem the same as well as the core elements the open-world setting brings. However, Atsu will have more choices to explore and influence the game’s narrative.
I hope more news and updates come soon about Ghost of Yōtei as I loved Ghost of Tsushima. Tsushima’s success and acclaim made it likely, but I am glad Sucker Punch and Sony are continuing the series. It’s an interesting time for video games in 2025 with Assassin’s Creed Shadows coming out soon too. With a broad release in 2025, it will be available exclusively on PS5.
Fable
The Fable series has had a tough time since 2010’s Fable III with development trouble and the closure of Lionhead Studios. I am optimistic however about the upcoming reboot. Existing fans like myself with be interested and bring new players to experience. Undoubtedly it will look stunning with Forza series developers Playground Games at the helm.
Voice actors like Peep Show’s Matt King being among the cast suggests that British humour will return. If they stick to the aspects that Fable fans enjoy I’m hopeful this will turn out great. Also, 14 years is a long time and we don’t see British humour in fantasy games. So fingers crossed video games of 2025 have a great addition with Fable when it lands on Windows and Xbox Series S/X.
Judas
Next is the only brand-new IP on the list, Judas, the debut from Ken Levine and Ghost Story Studio. As a huge fan of Bioshock & Bioshock Infinite, I am very excited about this. It is a brand new story taking place on a ship travelling through space where the last of humanity resides. The trailers and footage so far have strong similarities to Bioshock like being an FPS with super-powers and steampunk environments. It will likely be a high-concept story with thought-provoking elements like Ken Levine’s previous work.
I tried to avoid too many spoilers but I know Judas is the protagonist contending with the chaos of the three people in charge of the ship. While writing this section needless to say, if you enjoyed Bioshock you’ll enjoy Judas. The rumour is we’ll see it released before April 2025 but time will tell. I can say for certain it will be released on Windows, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
We have a remake this time marking Konami’s first Metal Gear game since 2018. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a remake of MGS3 and the first game in the fictional timeline. I’ll admit I have played very little of the series but I am interested if this is a good place to jump in. I read it will be a faithful recreation of the story and gameplay meaning Hideo Kojima’s influence on the series will be abundant.
Existing fans will jump at it and Snake’s first major mission in this Cold War-era stealth action game may entice others. I also heard that David Hayter’s original voice acting will be implemented suggesting they are being faithful to MGS3. Already delayed somewhat from 2024, hopefully, this bodes well for a 2025 release when Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater arrives on PS5, Xbox Series S/X and Windows.
Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra
Rounding off the top video games of 2025 is Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra. Marvel is teaming up with Skydance after the unpopular 2020 Marvel’s Avengers. As the title suggests it takes place in WWII Europe with Captain America fighting Hydra and the Nazis. This narrative-driven action-adventure game also has a small ensemble of playable heroes alongside Cap. There is also Azzuri the WWII-era Black Panther, Gabriel Jones of the Howling Commandos, and Nanali of the Wakandan Spy Network. Captain America and King Azzuri ally to combat Hydra but with very different approaches.
The 2020 Marvel Avengers game wasn’t well received but the setting is separate enough from the MCU to hopefully work. A big selling point for me is the involvement of Amy Hennig being a big part of writing and producing the game. What I have seen so far looks great and I’m optimistic this will stay true when Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is released at an unconfirmed date in 2025 on Windows, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.
Well here we are, I hope your most anticipated video games of 2025 made the list. Comment below if I missed yours and if you agree or disagree with me. I also recently wrote about video game remasters and would love to hear your thoughts. Happy holidays, have a wonderful end of 2024 and an amazing 2025.
