That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles is an Action RPG City Builder developed by ZOC Corp. Published by Bandai Namco, comes a game for this popular anime series that isn’t mobile only.
Normally when an anime gets a video game adaptation, you’d get one of two things. They’ll either find a point of the story to add something that wasn’t ever in the books. Or they’ll have us play the current story with our own hands to experience the whole thing first hand. I’m keen to see which road this takes us on.
Forget you, I’m going to build my own city! With monsters…and a slime? Yeah! A slime!
Gameplay
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles gives us a long recap. Which if you aren’t a fan of the anime is much needed. This is followed by a small tutorial on how movement works when you’re away from the village and when you’re in the village. After going through more familiar plotlines (if you’ve watched the anime), it’s not long before you meet new characters. One of them being Kataki, a bugbear that wants to get revenge on the wolves for killing goblins. There is an array of new characters I came across, but it’s better for everyone to experience them first hand.
With this game comes the city builder portion, something that had a lot of fans excited. Getting to build the great Tempest from scratch was honestly a great addition to the game. Though you are limited to only placing buildings in certain areas. And major buildings already have pre-determined slots that you can’t build over. That being said, the game does have a forgiving system where if you build something you don’t like, it can easily be replaced.
Graphics & Audio
Playing That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles on both PC and the Steam Deck was an…experience. Playing on PC was the better experience as I placed everything on high settings. I recommend doing this as you can see a huge difference when playing between low and high settings. Yet, when playing on the Steam Deck the game kept chugging along at 10 FPS. Along with heating my Steam Deck up so it was hot to touch. I will give it to the developers on the 3d cutscenes, these are done really well and I wished they would have been utilized more.
When it comes to audio, it seems they managed to hire the whole cast of the anime to voice their original lines. Sadly, I know it would cost a lot to hire the English cast to do the same thing so I don’t blame them for this being lacking. I’m thankful for having almost the entire game voiced at all. The game soundtrack feels authentic to the show’s soundtrack. And I found this no matter where I visited. This is amazing to listen to, however it does get a bit repetitive when out gathering resources for the town.
Longevity
Beating the game took about 50 hours. This includes time taken to 100% complete it. The developers have said there is more content coming down the pipeline in the form of DLC. Which I really can’t wait for. Apparently we can look forward to new modes, scenario, side quests, and buildings. The best part of these DLCs, is that there is steady release timeline for them all. After the first DLC is released the next one is just two weeks away and following that it’s just another week’s wait for the third.
Final Thoughts
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles is an anime game adaption I hope can get others onboard. Although as a fan of the anime, the game contains some things I wished it didn’t, I know these were included as something needed for the story. There are also the huge leaps of time we go through in the game that had me questioning the order in which we played certain events. I wished the developers had instead placed us at other points in time and had the two arcs at another juncture, so cannon events were not spoiled. Luckily I’ve been reading the manga and light novels to know when certain events happened, but not everyone would have done that.
Overall this game was a fun and joyful experience for both me and the missus. I would love for other game studios to use this game to improve themselves. If there are any developers reading this that are hoping to make an anime video game adaptation in the future, please learn from these mistakes. Don’t do this kind of story cutting. The anime fans will be grateful!
I am awarding That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime ISEKAI Chronicles the Thumb Culture Gold Award.
