The Witcher 4 Trailer Reveal And Reaction

Let me set the stage to my reaction when watching the reveal to The Witcher 4. It's 10 am JST, you're in a Discord voice channel with friends to watch the Game Awards together. I felt slightly sleepy and was thinking about just going back to bed. I get a bit of a jolt from seeing some new Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound (which as an aside looks great and has a nice retro Castlevania feel to it) But after shouting at one another over some of the games that won some of the awards, the tiredness has taken over. "This is my story, not yours. You must let me finish telling it." That is until I spot behind Geoff Keighley, the stage is starting to fog up and the background has changed to some creepy woods. A tall dark cave with fog spilling out and a wreath hanging on a dead bush appear. Then Geoff ann...

The Thaumaturge – PS5 Review

The Thaumaturge is a text heavy based isometric role-playing game developed by Fool's Theory and published by 11 Bit Studios. You may have heard about Fool's Theory from previous releases such as The Witcher Remake or being project support for games like Baldur's Gate or Divinity Original Sin 2. The publishers 11 Bit Studios are best known for Frostpunk or Indika which all take a very unique approach to games in general. In The Thaumaturge, we have a slightly familiar but refreshing take on RPG story telling. The game is set during year 1905 in Warsaw, Poland, which was, at the time, a part of Russian Empire. The Thaumaturge adds a drop of fantasy to the realistic set it creates. Thaumaturges can see memories left on things by other people, and influence people's minds, but only to some...

Paul’s Top 3 Games 2024

With 2024 drawing to a close and awards season underway, I've taken a look back through the games I've played this year and picked my top 3. These are presented in no particular order. They're the games that impressed me the most or provided the most joy. It's been a difficult year to narrow down my top picks, as most of what I've had a chance to play has been wonderful. However, narrow down I have, so let's have a look. Lorelei and the Laser Eyes The first game I reviewed this year and a return to writing after finishing my degree, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes was a fantastic way to come back. A project I'd been looking forward to since finishing up Simogo's previous game, Sayonara Wild Hearts. Lorelei and the Laser Eyes is heavily focused on puzzles. The game begins with a very co...

Currently Playing – Metaphor: ReFantazio

The main game taking up a lot of my time is Metaphor: Refantazio, which came out this October. I’ve enjoyed it so far, although outside of review games, I have only played Persona 5. JRPGs are something I enjoy, but usually when it’s turn-based, it’s a little hard for me to really get stuck in. The story of Metaphor: Refantazio is both simplistic and complicated, which I don’t mind. It’s a typical "try to change the world for the better by finding like-minded individuals" game. The way they go about dealing with harsh topics is interesting with the game dealing with Classism and Racial Bias. I still haven’t gotten used to how the calendar system works, which frustrates me at times. Such as dedicating days to help build bonds and then some for grinding out levels for my archetypes....

Metaphor: ReFantazio – PS5 Review

Studio Zero released Metaphor: ReFantazio on October 11th. The studio was formed in 2016 with several members who worked on the modern Persona titles. After previously working on the enhanced re-release of Catherine: Full Body, this is their first original IP. Selling a million copies on day one bodes well for Metaphor's aim to become the third pillar of Atlus' output, alongside the Persona and Shin Megami Tensai (SMT) series. Meta-Phwaor: ReFantazio Metaphor: ReFantazio is a JRPG with a traditional fantasy-style setting. The story opens with the assassination of the presiding king of the United Kingdom of Euchronia. Some years earlier, the king's son and only heir was struck down by a curse, leaving him in a coma-like state, with the world (barring a few close allies) believing him to b...
