Paper Cut Mansion – PC Review

Developed by Space Lizard Studio and published by Thunderful, Paper Cut Mansion folded its way out on the 27th of October. Reams Of Puzzles And Scares! I have heard nothing but praise for Paper Cut Mansion. So I stayed away from the reviews until I could get my hands on it and find some time to sit down and play it for myself. I was never 100% sold on it. Finally, here we are, keep reading to find out how I get on. Gameplay You pull up in your cardboard car and take a wander through the woods following the elusive green moth until you reach the gates of the house. You are then sucked through a musical paper portal that would feel at home in a Tim Burton movie. Starting in the first room, you are taken on a journey playing Paper Cut Mansion whilst learning at the same time. Each ...

Signalis – Switch Review

Nothing sums up the artful, near-pretentious confidence of Signalis better than how some players are going to miss its final act and they won’t realise. I won’t go into spoilers, but this retro-futuristic survival horror game—which plays like an art-house cinema mashup of classic Resident Evil, classic Metal Gear Solid, and the ever under-appreciated Eternal Darkness—has a fake out ending. This design choice is bold, assertive, and a little strange, a trio of adjectives which represent the game well. WHAT ANDROIDS DREAM The first wave of my enthusiasm towards Signalis peaked during the impressively confident first hour and a half. From the menu screen, with its cathode-ray-tube visuals and clacking sound of its slowly-revealing text, to the opening screens of the game itself, with their ...

The Chant – PS5 Review

The Chant is a brand new single-player third-person horror, action/adventure title from the minds at Brass Token. Based in Vancouver, Canada, The Chant is their first original IP. That is not to say the studio isn't stacked with talent. The team includes several industry veterans who worked on titles such as Bully and Sleeping Dogs. Definitely not a cult? Hitting my radar in June this year The Chant struck my attention partly due to the original teaser trailer. The trailer started with a shot over a lake looking towards the retreat. It looked peaceful and relaxing, as they sit down inside the Geodome, which is when everything changed to darkness, enemies and chaos. Gameplay The Chant takes place on a spiritual island retreat that hides a dark secret. Our protagonist is Jess who has...

Oxide Room 104 – PS5 Review

Horror comes in all shapes and sizes, and WildSphere's Oxide Room 104 thinks bigger is not always better. This self-published title takes cues from body horror and escape rooms to combine them into this neat, but short, horror-puzzler package. Oxide Room 104 - It's an Evil F***ing Room Oxide Room 104 was released on June 16th, 2022 on all current consoles and PC. I love a good horror game as nothing has chilled me since Outlast. When I saw the trailer, it really gave me Saw (the movie) vibes and I immediately wanted to play it. So, let's open the door to Oxide Room 104 and see what's inside. Gameplay So after the intro where you, Matt, get knocked out at the gas station, you wake up in the bathtub of some dingy motel. You're naked, injured, confused and have absolutely no idea how ...

Unavowed – Switch Review

The opening of Unavowed — a point-and-click adventure game first released in 2018 on Mac and PC and now out on the Switch — throws you straight into the action. The first shot is of a moody, blood-orange sky depicted in beautiful, high-quality pixel art (the resolution so high that the word ‘pixel’ seems redundant). Rain is falling. Tense music plays. With the exception of the main character, the game is entirely voice-acted, and we hear some dialogue of what turns out to be an exorcism. The camera pans down to three figures on a rooftop, one of which is you: you are the one being exorcised. You don’t remember anything and you’re confused as hell. Of the other two figures, one has a knife in your back and the other a magic staff in your face. For some, a magic staff might sound off-putt...
