The Tartarus Key – PC Review

Despite the plethora of high-definition scares out there, low-poly indie horrors have experienced a surge in recent years. There's an audience out there eager for PS1-style spoopy entertainment. Following the success of their visual novel game Aviary Attorney, Portugal-based studio Vertical Reach decided to trade sparrows for scares. From this came The Tartarus Key, a psychological horror adventure game with both a Saw-esque nature and an eldritch aura. You play Alex Young, an average teenager who wakes up in a strange mansion. She has no memory of how she got there, but cameras watch her every move. Doors are locked with puzzles and devious contraptions. And it seems as though she is not the only one trapped here. But things take an ominous turn when Alex begins to hear things, see thi...

Goodbye Volcano High – PS5 Review

Cast your minds back, all the way to mid-2020. Sony unveiled the PlayStation 5 with a showcase featuring 25 games. Since then, 22 games have come and gone leaving just 3 remaining, until now. Goodbye Volcano High finally reached us on 29th August 2023. Was it worth the wait? Developed and published by Canadian team KO_OP, who've previously worked on GNOG (2017) and Winding Worlds (2020), this represents a foray into heavily story based content. I've been waiting on this for a while with the hopes it will fill the current Life is Strange shaped hole in my heart. Dilemmas & Dinosaurs I can't believe it's already been a year since Love. Pop. Panic! (formerly We Are OFK) released, and I'm glad to have another mix of narrative and musical elements to sink into. Gameplay Goodbye Volca...

Sea Of Stars – PS5 Review

Sabotage Studios is a team from Quebec that loves making retro-inspired games. You might be familiar with one of their previous titles, The Messenger. Now, releasing for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and Steam comes Sea of Stars, a new Pixel Turn-based RPG. There is a Demo on both Steam and PlayStation. There are many stories to share, let's begin with yours. I was browsing PlayStation free games when I stumbled across Sea of Stars. What caught my eye first was the Pixel art style and the dual characters. There aren't many turn-based games I'll play, but this looked promising, so I thought I'd give it a go.  Gameplay The game opens up with the player meeting a mysterious individual known only as the Archivist. They ask you to join them in the retelling of a world in turmoil thanks to ...

Forever Skies – PC Preview

Forever Skies is a different take on the post-apocalyptic base-building survival genre. It is the flagship game of Far From Home Studios, who believe that games can be a tool for enacting change in the world. Forever Skies is available in Early Access for PC only on Steam. Forever Skies Brings Survival to New Heights Let's face it: there are a lot of base-building survival games out there right now. Many of them are post-apocalyptic, and even more involve zombies or other similar savage humanoids. So while Forever Skies seems to follow that post-apocalyptic route, it caught my eye because it looked a bit different than what I'm used to seeing. Not to mention the idea of a floating base too. Thankfully there also don't appear to be any zombies either, which I am very glad for. Gamepl...

Howard Lotor, players were thrown into a world of intrigue and conspiracy and were left with some questions hanging in the air. 2 years later, they return to share how it all began with prequel Tails: The Backbone Preludes. Tails takes place years before the events of its predecessor, showing the beginnings of its key characters. Re-Loaded – PC Review

In December 1996, when the internet was young and Google was less than a year old, the DVD format had just been released and Tom Holland was in nappies, Gremlin Interactive released Re-Loaded less than a year after the moderately successful Loaded. Cut to 2023 and it is the responsibility of Urbanscan to bring the trip down memory lane to the nostalgia driven masses. Time to fashion myself a mohawk and grab the nearest weapon of choice and head off to defeat the enemies and revisit my youth. Re-Loaded - Just another bullet in the chamber? Who doesn't like a little bit of retro action? A visit to the childhood memories that are so sacred in the process of growing up. A chance to force our children to endure the basic lives that we all led before they were even a tingle in our trousers. Ti...

Bandit Brawler – PC Review

After a hard day at work there is nothing better than a good bar fight, or so I am told. Titanite Games have decided to make that a reality for all with their latest release Bandit Brawler. Obviously, there are a few drawbacks, you have to rob and pillage a lot to be a true bandit, so that's officially now your day job. Time to see if I know the difference between a Haymaker and a Bolo punch in a few fights. Best get my sparkly dressing gown ready and some decent intro music, it's off I go to beat up some people. (please be aware that Thumb Culture does not affiliate itself with actual fights in real bars/clubs/supermarkets/petrol stations) Swing and a Miss or a Knockout Blow? I wonder if this game will take me back to my youth when I used to go out clubbing a lot. Bring it on and don't ...
