Phantom Fury – PC Review

Published by 3D Realms and created at Slipgate Ironworks™ comes a new retro-shooter called Phantom Fury. The game was released for Steam on April 24th, for £20.49, with a Digital Artbook also available for purchase at £2.49. Some players might know the protagonist from the developer's other work called Bombshell. Although that game was a top-down shooter, their new game changes to an FPS style. This is one Phantom that doesn't hide in the shadows We take the role of Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison after she awakes in a lab thanks to a character called the Colonel. The area you are in is being attacked by the GDF, and your first task is to arm up and get out of there. This takes the player across various areas and wielding a large armoury or weapons. This may be Shelly’s second game, but th...

Knock’em Out – PC Review

Do you ever find yourself in need of an effective way to vent some steam after a hectic day? Instead of punching friends or fellow students/colleagues, game developer Adribeh has kindly created a forum to allow you to safely punch your friends to a bloody pulp with Knock'em Out. This early-access game was released on 4th April. At the moment there's a sale on reducing the price to £3.99. The developer provides a simple description on its Steam page, "Keep a cool head to knock out your opponents in the most violent and fun way!" I got the chance to get within punching distance with fellow Thumb Culture reviewers Stuart and Kyle to give the game a fair whack. See what we thought below. A Smash Hit That's Hard To Beat! Nothing beats the adrenaline when clutching a win in a fast-paced multip...

Sker Ritual – PC Review

I'm checking out the new game from Wales Interactive called Sker Ritual. The name might ring some bells as they did have a previous horror game as well called Maid of Sker. Although, that entry was a single-player horror experience. Their new game, however, takes a rather bold direction by switching to a round-based zombie shooter similar to Call of Duty Zombies.  You and up to three friends can fight waves together as Sker Ritual is available now on Steam for £19.99. The game is still in early access, but its full 1.0 release will be on the 18th of this month. There's a demo also available for the game for those looking to try before you buy. Nôl i mi eu heneidiau! From the Steam page, the Sker Ritual takes place after the events of Maid of Sker. The story primarily will appear throu...

Nyaaaanvy – Switch Review

CustomiseSounding a bit like the sound you make when you stub your toe, Nyaaaanvy is a crazy arena-based fighting game that has now come to Nintendo Switch. The game is made by Japanese devs Team DigitalMind and published by Phoenixx and it is also available on PC via Steam. Incidentally, it was launched for Switch on Japanese Cat Day (22nd Feb for your calendars!). Cats, bottoms, sumo, berserk mode! If you fancy a party game where cat-like animals (called a Nyanvy) get to wrestle and spin attack to win then read on! Gameplay The premise of Nyaaaanvy is fairly simple. You are a long slinky cat and you must battle and jump your way through a series of sumo-like arenas and become the last cat standing. Can you become "Cat of cats!"? South Park: Snow Day! – PS5 Review

I got to check out South Park: Snow Day, the next addition where we'll play as the "New Kid" as Cartman pulls us into another game. Thanks to the developers at Question, you and three other New Kids will team up together and face off against Elves, Marshwalkers and Sixth Graders. The game releases for PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam on March 26th for £24.99. Goin' down to South Park, gonna have myself a time. I've enjoyed the last two South Park games and was happy to hear of this one. It's interesting to see them take a different approach with the multiplayer and hack-n-slash gameplay, but it never hurts to try new ideas. As a disclaimer, I'll be using curse words in this article and maybe a reference or two from the show. Better context for the story. I won't be talking about South ...

Alone in the Dark – PC Review

Alone in the Dark has seen many iterations as it is a franchise that spans over 30 years. The fact that I was 12 years old when I played the original by Infogrames does make me have a bit of an existential moment. Here in 2024, we have devs Pieces Interactive and publisher/owner of the franchise THQ Nordic's vision for the Lovecraftian horror, action, puzzle-solving instalment of the game. Back to Derceto we go With the original 1992 Alone in the Dark paving the way for 3D-style horror games such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, I was very excited to see how this single-player game has evolved to catch up with what we expect nowadays in terms of gameplay, storyline, visuals, and sound. Alone in the Dark will be available on PS5, Xbox and PC. There is a standard edition, a deluxe digi...

Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor – PC Preview

Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor is a new bullet-hell roguelite available in Early Access. It is being developed by Funday Games (Don't Die In The West) with publishing by Ghost Ship Publishing (Spellrogue, Deep Rock Galactic [technically Coffee Stain Publishing]). It is currently available for PC via Steam and there is no indication that it will be available on other platforms. It's Like a Love Letter to Rock and Stone I don't know about you, but I love Deep Rock Galactic. Overall it has a simple concept, is easy to dive into, and is a hell lot of fun playing with friends. If you haven't checked it out, I highly recommend doing so. As a fan of DRG, I couldn't overlook when the Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor demo hit Steam a while back. I was itching to get my hands on it for more and here we ...
