We are massive fans of LEGO over at Thumb Culture, and when it was announced that the new LEGO Smart Brick was coming, we were dubious. We took the plunge and purchase the LEGO Smartbrick Set #75423, Luke’s Red Five X-Wing. It came with a Smart Brick, and was an absolute joy to build. Bringing the inner child out of me with it creating sound effects for me, instead of me having to do it. Fast Forward a short period of time, and LEGO were great enough to send us through two other Smart Brick sets.

May The Force Be With You

They dropped on us the Luke’s Landspeeder and AT-ST Attack on Endor sets. Both don’t come with a Smart Brick, but they are compatible with them. How were they to build and just what do the new LEGO Smart Bricks bring to your imagination? Let’s find out!

#75424 – AT-ST Attack on Endor

The first of the two sets is one that really pulled at my heart strings. One of my first ever LEGO sets was an AT-ST so this was great for my inner child. With only 347 pieces spread over four bags, it will probably take you about 60 minutes to complete. In that time though you get to build the AT-ST itself, as well as a speeder bike. Included are two Smart tags, and one Smart minifigure. These have little QR type images on them, that when brought close to the LEGO Smart Brick, unlocks sounds and more.

The LEGO Smart Brick unlocks so much potential in play, Whether its walking the AT-ST along a table, and hearing the motor noises of its legs. Or even the firing of lasers when you use the levers that you build. It brings to life the set in ways only your imagination can bring to life.

There seems to be some reviews on the LEGO website complaining this set doesnt come with a LEGO Smart Brick. It is pretty clear on the box that this doesn’t come with one, so I honestly don’t know why people chose to complain. The other complaint is that the sayings dont mirror the real life counterparts. Let’s be honest though, if LEGO were to have all the correct sayings there would probably be a licensing issue. For me, I’m happy with the noises and sound effects that come out of the LEGO Smart Brick.

#75420 – Luke’s Landspeeder

The second set that we were sent through was another that made me smile. I’m a big Luke Skywalker fan, so to have the LEGO Smart Brick set for his Landspeeder was great. Smaller than #75424 at only 215 pieces in it’s two bags, this one will take you even less time. With a Landspeeder included as well as a service station with fuel hose, hammer and other accessories. It also comes with one Smart Tag, and one Smart Minifigure to play with. This set is a lot of fun because not only does the Landspeeder react to being moved around, but you can also repair and refuel it.

Using the green hammer, you will get a mechanical noise that sounds like something being repairs. Bring the blue hose into play and you’ll get a gurgling noise to replicate the landspeeder being refueled. Its a neat little touch. As is the carton of blue milk in the landspeeder. With this set you can recreate A New Hope stories, and head to the Jawa’s to purchase a new droid. Unfortunately, there is no R2-D2 with this set, but you do get a Gonk droid to build.

Final Thoughts

Both of these sets were a lot of fun to build, and even more enjoyable to play with. These LEGO Smart Bricks have just made me excited to see what other sets become available. All the Smart Brick sets at the moment are just for the Star Wars brand. It would be good to see some of the Speed Champions sets get the LEGO Smart Brick treatment. Overall, these were a great build and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of the process.

The LEGO Smart Bricks receive the Thumb Culture Gold Award.
