0 We recently covered the Moza Racing R3 Bundle so you can imagine our excitement when we were offered the Moza Racing R9 V3 Wheel Base to check out. A few days later it arrived in a nice little box and the testing commenced. I didn’t even have time to put on my driving gloves.
Making Racing A Little More Exciting
Lets head to the starting line and see whether or not the Moza Racing R9 Wheel Base is going to get off the line quickly. Or whether it’ll get bogged down and stall.
Design Features
As with the R3, the R9 Wheel Base features the same shaped design with the vents designed to dissipate heat. Being made from aviation-grade aluminium, it keeps the unit nice and cool even after a few hours of use. Featuring a 9Nm Direct Drive servo motor, the R9 recreates the bumps and turns of real life racing. Ensuring that what you feel through the wheel is exactly what’s going on on track.
With a 21-Bit Magnetic Encoder the Moza Racing R9 Wheel Base is able to create an ultra-smooth feel with instant response time. By dividing each full rotation of a steering wheel into over 2 million steps, it is able to deliver microscopic degree changes which reproduce incredibly detailed force feedback.
With a compact design, you will be amazed at how this wheel performs. I spent the entirety of testing with it clamped to my desk with the included desktop clamp. Even with this method, I didn’t feel like the wheel was going to move or shift in any way. I was more worried about my tempered glass desk, but thankfully it survived. All having this wheel base has done is make me want a proper wheel stand. That isn’t solely down to the fact that the force feedback was making my entire desk jiggle.
App-Life
What I love about the Moza Racing R9 Wheel Base is the mobile app. Yes, you can download the Moza Pit House app for your computer, and that’s great and all but it’s not as easily accessible when mid game. Just download the Moza Racing app on your mobile and you’re experience will change. A quick and simple connection step and you have full control of all the parameters at your fingertips. Not to mention a whole raft of pre-sets depending on what style of racing you are doing.
For the majority of my testing time, I spent playing F1 25. Freshly released and as an F1 fan, it was inevitable that I’d play this a lot. Firstly I started the wheel up, got into the game and did a few laps on the default settings. No tinkering or anything. Then I got brave and started up the F1 pre-set. Immediately, it was a totally different prospect. The wheel base came alive, every bump in the road was prominent, and the cars felt like they had an incredible weight. This even made me faster in-game. Having to be more precise with my movements just made me a better racer. Well, at least I thought.
Another key point is that I never had any problems with F1 25, it recognised the wheel set up straight away. I just wanted to mess about with the keybinds to ensure that it was set up just right for me!
Compatibility
The Moza Racing R9 V3 Wheel Base is another great piece of hardware for the Moza Racing ecosystem. Being able to connect any number of the line up of wheel rims to the wheel base, just gives it such an amazing appeal. Hopefully, we might get to cover some of the incredible wheel rims in the future!
Alongside that, it means that you can just purchase a new wheel base, and you don’t have to upgrade any of the other pieces of your setup. With a price point of £359 on the Moza website, it is an incredible way to get into sim racing. Especially if you play one of the many games that this wheel works with. Whether that’s Asseto Corsa, F1, Project Cars or even Wreckfest. This wheel does them all.
Final Thoughts
So was the Moza Racing R9 V3 Wheel Base an upgrade that would be worth making? Absolutely! For the price, you are getting an incredible experience. Which, depending on the rest of your setup, will only get better. Honestly, Moza Racing have absolutely smashed it out of the park with this wheel. I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel at the starting line.
