Hypercharge: Unboxed is a first-person and third-person action figure shooter. Hypercharge: Unboxed was developed and published by the five indie developers at Digital Cybercherries. The feat here is a fully complete game with some decent amount of content and fun even with just a five person team. It’s nice to see a passion project come to life like this. The game is available on the PlayStation Store for Pre-Order ahead of it’s launch on the 30th May at 4pm.

Hypercharge?? More Like Hydrocharge!

If you ever spent your younger years wishing you could be a toy soldier and role play all your favourite stories, then this is the game for you!

I prefer Banana & Boulders myself!

Gameplay

The gameplay loop of Hypercharge: Unboxed is very straight forward. This is basically a tower defence game shooter. Where you, a toy of some variety, shoot down evil toys and stop it from getting to the Hypercharge Cores. The controls are quite simple and everything is laid out quite well. The tutorial goes through everything you need in a nicely set out playground with tasks to complete which makes understanding the game much easier.

Protecting the Hypercore is your main objective. This consists of building traps, brick walls and other fun things to give you and your fellow toys and advance against toys like the Spinners. Which are by far my favourite enemy. Being a kid obsessed with Beyblades seeing those Doom Spinners fly into the room was a dream come true!

The gameplay overall is very simple. Defend the core, shoot waves of enemies, collect coins and collectibles, while this can get a little monotonous. Especially if you don’t have a group of friends to play this with or don’t have a very vivid imagination. I enjoyed the gameplay for what it was however going forward I’ll be roping some of my friends into playing this with me to make it a little more fun. That’s not to say the game is boring, but it is best done in short burst if you’re playing this on your own!

Graphics

The graphics in Hypercharge: Unboxed is where the game really shines. The level design is something else! You really do feel like a kid playing out scenarios with your toy soldiers. This consists of different environments like shops, bathrooms, bedrooms, attics. The level of detail in these levels is fantastic, the other toys and objects all having silly names and amazing detail on the other toy boxes is amazing. I simply cannot praise the devs enough for the amount of love that went into the creation of the environments. Even something like a simple bathroom was so well detailed, with shampoo bottles and laundry detergents, climbing and jumping all over the level felt great. Walking through a blanket fort in another level was just spot on and equally brought back some wonderful childhood memories.

The toys in Hypercharge: Unboxed feel alive and the voice lines are great which makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a Toy Story film! Or even Small Soldiers! At the start of every level you start of in a toy box of your own. You then burst out of this to get started and the little details like this were very welcomed. All the character details and customisation is mega fun. The weapon upgrade system being purchased from your own toy box in the game is so awesome and even the zip ties falling off is such a wonderful detail.

Longevity

The story mode for Hypercharge: Unboxed is great and had some really funny moment. Got a few nods to other games in here and which felt like a really well thought out story in turn. The characters are great and are full of character. Flushing the toilet in the bathroom after seeing the story at the beginning was such a silly thing. Absolutely did not fail to bring a smile to my face.

You can play the game in local Co-op and online. Which is great if you have older kids at home wanting to learn a little strategy with the base building and having a little fun. You can have a good time reminiscing with them so it makes for some great family time. Although I’ll be getting my group of friends together to play online so we can all have a big of a giggle and laugh!

Final Thoughts

So finally, Hypercharge: Unboxed is a fantastic game with high and lows. It really plays into your childhood memories to hit that sweet spot in terms of nostalgia. The gameplay is a little lacklustre at the moment, and is my only miss in terms of the game. However with only five developers, this can be easily forgiven. The passion and love gone into the project really overshadows the lows for this one.

I do hope the developers implement more modes in future updates. Please Digital Cybercherries keep supporting the game and expanding the Hypercharge: Unboxed universe!

With everything taken into consideration Hypercharge: Unboxed has earned a Thumb Culture Gold Award.
