Hordes of Fate: A Hand of Fate Adventure is an action roguelite, horde survivors-like based on the setting of the Hand of Fate games by Defiant Development. Spitfire Interactive (Capes) is developing the game in this genre though, with Defiant Development (Hand of Fate) publishing. The game is currently only available to Wishlist on Steam, but you can download and play the demo now.

My Games are Blending Together…

Ok, so maybe roguelites aren’t the only games I seem to end up playing around here. Horde survivors-like games seem to be just as likely. Hordes of Fate: A Hand of Fate Adventure is the more latter leaning of the two. So where does it stand up currently with the rest? Check out my thoughts on the demo build below.

Gameplay

Hordes of Fate: A Hand of Fate Adventure is the IP’s dip into the action roguelite and horde survivors-like genre. Drawing from the world and gameplay of Hand of Fate, cards and chance take the form of enhancements, spells and equipment as hordes of enemies pursue you. Collect experience gems from fallen foes to level up and gain these new cards. You also collect shards throughout each run that you then exchange between runs for permanent upgrades.

The demo for Hordes of Fate: A Hand of Fate Adventure currently consists of one playable character, one challenge path, and two difficulties. The permanent upgrades to unlock between runs is also present, providing the ability to spend more time with the demo to fill them all out if you wish. With the understanding that this is only a demo though, the lack of further content is not unexpected.

Unfortunately the Hordes of Fate: A Hand of Fate Adventure demo feels like it is really lacking. If you are a Hand of Fate fan that has always wanted a horde survivors-like version of the game then this will interest you. For myself though, it currently feels like a basic reskin of any other similar game within the genre. There’s nothing in the demo that really makes it stand out or helps distinguish from the others. If Spitfire Interactive wants to draw in a larger audience, they really need to get more of what is in their trailers and screenshots into the demo.

Graphics & Audio

Hordes of Fate: A Hand of Fate Adventure is currently only available via demo on PC. However, I did also find it playable at default settings on my Steam Deck. Since it’s a demo there didn’t seem to be a cloud save to go back and forth which was kind of a bummer. The game runs smoothly and is visually appealing. However, I did note that the generic level design in the demo in addition to the very basic experience gem design really made me feel like this is just a reskin of Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor.

I did enjoy that the audio track for Hordes of Fate: A Hand of Fate Adventure has noticeable cues for spells/abilities going off. I found it helpful to listen at times when I needed to more closely watch where I was maneuvering. Apart from that, the music felt appropriate and of a fantasy theme that I presume matches the Hand of Fate setting well.

Longevity

Obviously with this being a demo for Hordes of Fate: A Hand of Fate Adventure, the amount of time spent with it is going to be what you decide is worth putting into a demo. The full game will obviously have a lot more content to explore and master. I believe the game will last a good while if it draws in the right audience.

Final Thoughts

With the understanding that I was just playing a demo for Hordes of Fate: A Hand of Fate Adventure, I still have some concerns. The demo itself severely lacks any sort of content to draw in outside players.

I would encourage Spitfire Interactive to add more of what is seen in screenshots and trailers for the game into the demo if they want to have a better chance at gaining an audience. This will especially be important since it looks like they will be shooting for a full release launch.
