We covered the news that Home Sports was in development by Resolution Games back in September. The studio is known for their VR titles such as Demeo, Racket Club, and Blastion and now they add the recently released Home Sports to that list. It is available on the Meta Quest Store now for £15.99.
Let’s Play Some Sportsball
The big question is whether Resolution Games has another hit on their hands! So let’s get right to it, Batter Up!
Gameplay
Home Sports features five sports: badminton, pickleball, mini-golf, bowling, and hockey. Each Sport offers its distinct feel and is designed to cater to various player preferences. The game’s standout feature is its adjustability to your physical space. Not to mention it’s all in mixed reality is a close second for standout features. You can also adjust how big you want your play space as you play. The controls are beginner friendly with tutorials for each sport ensuring that players can quickly understand the mechanics of each sport. Speaking of the sports, let’s get into them shall we?
Bowling
A nation’s favourite sport! There are lots of games that have incorporated bowling from the comfort of your own home. The most obvious that comes to mind is of course Wii Sports Bowling. This is like Wii Sports Bowling extreme. The bowling within Home Sports feels natural. The controls are precise and mimic real-life arm motions well. And yes, you can curve the ball!
Mini-Golf
Again there are a lot of VR games centring around Mini-Golf. And why not, its a fun easy game to play. This is no different. The Home Sports mini-golf offers a creative, colourful course that transforms your living room into a putting green. The controls once again feel natural and I had great fu putting balls around my living room.
Hockey
This is where things felt a little different. The Hockey section provides an arcade-style experience, whereby it’s just you vs another guy. The aim is to defend your goal whilst also attempting to score yourself. You don’t have to move around too much and the arcade style is fun.
Badminton and Pickleball
I’ve stuck these last two sports together as at the core they felt the same. Get a racket. Hit an object. Be fast. These fast-paced racket based games felt very demanding in terms of agility. Not to mention the need for lightening quick reflexes.
Graphics & Audio
Home Sports adopts a vibrant and cartoony art style that balances simplicity with functionality. While not aiming for hyper-realistic visuals, the game excels in creating bright and engaging environments that feel approachable for all ages.
The music in the game is charming to listen and each sport has distinct sound effects that enhance the feeling of engagement. Even when using the voice chat in multiplayer modes the sound was clear. Which made for smooth communication during matches, even if our playing wasn’t always smooth!
Longevity
Home Sports lets you invite up to 3 friends to join you locally or online, and compete in multiplayer action. There are also Solo match drills and a career mode to sharpen your skills. With all this, you can keep you coming back for more. With all this, there is plenty of content to keep returning for more alone or with friends.
Final Thoughts
Home Sports is a delightful entry into the mixed reality gaming space that may not redefine sports gaming, but it successfully bridges the gap between nostalgic fun and future innovation. This game is a must-try for Meta Quest 3 users seeking an engaging, family-friendly MR experience. There are many VR sports games but this title deserves a chance or two for everyone.
I award Home Sports the Thumb Culture Gold Award.
