What could be better for Mario fans than LEGO’s San Diego Comic-Con’s reveal? Maybe the LEGO Mario Kart reveal done at this week’s gamescom?!

Lakitu is ready and waiting with his Start Signal

The previously teased LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart sets were officially revealed today in Cologne. These six new sets will be releasing in January 2025, just in time for you to splash that Christmas cash! And whilst details are still limited, thanks to the lovely LEGO PR Team we have some of the first official images and set info to share with you.

Yoshi Bike – Set 72031

First up is my personal favourite, the LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart Yoshi Bike set. The Yoshi bike is as iconic in Mario Kart as the standard Kart and this small set doesn’t disappoint. Included is a light blue Yoshi figure, a shell item, and the Yoshi bike. All brick built of course.

Standard Kart – Set 72032

One for the OGs, and recognisable from the Mar10 Day teaser trailer, it’s the classic Standard Kart. Use this set to build the standard edition Mario Kart and it’s detachable Super Glider. That’s not all though, you will also build a Toad figure in a red pit crew uniform and a tiny workstation for them. I love the little banana sitting there ready to be launched.

Baby Mario vs. Baby Luigi – Set 72034

This next set is one I am withholding judgement on. It doesn’t seem to have quite hit the mark for me. Although Thumb Culture EIC thinks it is very cute. Rather than being Mario Kart races inspired, the focus of this set is on the Balloon Battle within the Mario Kart games.  Set 72034 features Baby Mario in his Biddybuggy kart and Baby Luigi in his Tri-Speeder. With six buildable balloons and some shells the Baby Mario and Luigi do look ready to ready to battle.

Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo – Set 72033

Donkey Kong is a divisive character in Mario Kart. You have people like me who main him or Bowser, and others who prefer a smaller slicker character. Being a fan of the chonky boy, I am glad to see this set does not diminish Donkey Kong or his signature kart – the DK Jumbo. Whilst I do wonder if the nearly £30 price point is worth it, I do love the little target included.

Toad’s Garage – Set 72035

The penultimate set revealed is the LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart Toad’s Garage set. I’m not entirely sure which Mario Kart game this set is a reference to. Does this make me a fake fan? This sets includes two buildable Pit Crew Toads and a B Dasher kart. The focus of this set seems to be on customizing your own kart. Which may just be the LEGO version of the Mario Kart starting options.

Baby Peach & Grand Prix – Set 72036

This is the biggest and most expensive set of this LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart reveal. I can hear this starting line and I’m already pressing A for a little boost. The Baby Peach & Grand Prix set includes a buildable Baby Peach and Wild Wiggler kart, a Lemmy and Landship kart as well as Toad and standard bike. Not forgetting Lakitu and their starting signal!  The race track arrows, starting gate and even awards podium show just who LEGO are aiming this set at. This is definitely meant to be a play set rather than one for the collectors.

Simon Kent, Design Director at the LEGO Group says: “We are beyond excited to turbo-charge our LEGO Super Mario universe with the reveal of these latest Mario Kart sets, that we know fans have been eagerly waiting for. We can’t wait for builders of all ages to put their pedal to the metal and bring Mario Kart races to brick-built reality at home with friends and family. The brand-new LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart sets provide an immersive building experience and capture the heart-pounding action of the beloved video game series – showing fans that the world is your track like never before!”

There we have it, the six new LEGO Super Mario: Mario Kart sets. I know the reveal wasn’t quite what I was expecting. The previous teaser trailer had me envisioning a LEGO Technic style Mario Standard Kart. But I can see the a-peel of these sets. Especially as each of these sets can be used in conjunction with the interactive  LEGO Mario, LEGO Luigi and LEGO Peach figures. Unlocking iconic Mario Kart audio and visual effects from the game. How do you feel about this reveal?
