Take flour, eggs, some missing children and a sprinkle of horror, mix it in a bowl and bake it, and then you’ve got Cakey’s Twisted Bakery. TinyMindz’s latest release has you searching for your younger brother who has gone missing somewhere in the bakery.
You can currently grab Cakey’s Twisted Bakery on Steam for £3.89
Sugar, Spice and the Most Horrific Child-Eating Monsters You Could Ever Imagine

Gameplay
Cakey’s Twisted Bakery starts as you break out of a crate, picking up a flashlight and then provides little explanation to what you’re supposed to do. You’re set free to figure it out on your own.
The aim of the game is to defeat all the baked good baddies and find your brother that has gone missing. To do this you must collect ingredients, bake pies and lob them at any enemies you stumble upon. As you run around the bakery you will find posters on the wall which explain the ingredients you need to make each pie.

The posters don’t actually matter as you can just run around and fill the baking machine with whatever ingredients you can find as the machine deducts the ingredients automatically.
Beating the system
Triggering Cakey’s spawn initially seems very inconsistent. The game autosaves every 3 minutes, so I wasn’t sure whether it was a countdown or something specific. In order to really get to the bottom of the spawn situation, I started a new game a couple of times to see what was most consistent.
Whilst this isn’t a game breaking issue, if you get lucky with the ingredient placement you can stock up before even spawning the first enemy.
Unfortunately…
Cakey suffers from the same problem that many horror games suffer with. The longer you play, the less threatening the monsters are. You know from the moment you get spotted whether you are going to survive or not, which really reduces the fear factor.
As well as this, once you know where the hiding places are, it’s pretty smooth sailing. Even if Cakey or one of his friends is right behind you, as soon as you get under a table or in a box you cease to exist. Once you come to terms with that, it’s a struggle to keep the tension.

Graphics & Audio
Imagine being in a haunted bakery after hours, make it neon and then add some monsters to it. That is Cakey’s Twisted Bakery. The visuals fit the game perfectly and live up to what my expectations were. The audio also matches really well, creating an atmosphere that makes you wonder whether the creaks you’re hearing are monsters or just the sounds of a rickety building.
Enemy Design
TinyMindz has excelled with the creation of the monsters. They are unsettling and feel dangerous when you first interact with them. Somehow cake batter and bright frosting has become something other than delicious. Out of the enemy designs, I think Frostina was my favourite.

Longevity
This game isn’t difficult by any means. Once you understand what you need to do, collecting ingredients and baking pies isn’t the hardest thing. As previously mentioned, the fear factor gets less and less prominent the more you play so, realistically, I don’t think there’s that much life in it.
Despite that, Cakey’s Twisted Bakery still has a lot of strength as an indie game but for me, it is a one time play experience.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, the horror elements of Cakey’s Twisted Bakery are weaker than other indie games on the market but for such a low price point I still think it’s worth giving a go. All things considered, I have to give Cakey the Thumb Culture Silver Award. Definitely a game to pick up if you’re looking for a short, uncomplicated horror game.
