Spintires: Mudrunner by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Home Interactive is available from today on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and through Steam. It has a very niche section of the gaming community very excited with its huge Soviet-era trucks tackling all terrains. I always thought I could drive anything in the game world but having seen some of these behemoths I’m now unsure. Lets find out shall we?

Gameplay

I put on my best trucking hat and picked up my controller and now I’m ready to roll. Thankfully Spintires: Mudrunner has a tutorial to start with. My god I needed this. The game physics and simulation level are top-notch and I don’t have any real life experience off-road either.

Initially I started with the challenge mode. Yes back to front I know but I do like a challenge. The driving in this game is a lot harder than I expected. Maybe its just me but at first I struggled even driving in a straight line. I battled the camera all the way to begin with. After several choice words to myself I did start to get the hang of it. Each challenge has a three star rating. Each star represents a goal within the challenge. I only managed two stars in the first challenge. Hang my head in shame.

Convoy

I don’t know if it will be altered in the final release, I hope it does. The star I missed out on was reversing my truck and trailer into the required space while inside the view of my cab. I failed this one as even though the truck has wing mirrors the mirrors didn’t actually work. I couldn’t see any reflection so i hope this is corrected on release or in a day one patch.

Next for Spintires: Mudrunner is the single player career mode. If you want daunting then this is the place to go. You start of in the middle of the woods with no idea what your meant to be doing. I spent the first hour driving round the bog opening up the various vehicles on offer. While I did that I made a point of visiting the watch towers on the way as they open up your map so it’s not just black.

The Mud Gets Deep

I would have loved more direction in career mode as it was a frustrating experience. That said I did LOVE driving all those huge vehicles. You do feel almost indestructible to mother natures forces when you’re in them. Although you will get a shock as I did when I hit a tree and killed my engine.

You can upgrade your vehicles in the garage to give them trailers etc which is something to do as soon as possible. Also all vehicles have a winch system attached to them which is invaluable trust me. You’ll need this especially stuck in a fast-moving river that’s current is trying to force you downriver.

Graphics

The graphics on show in Spintires: Mudrunner  are solid. They feel the part and the only grumps I had with them were I felt the detail on the mud stuck to the tires could have been a bit better and I had no view through my wing mirrors. That being said, the vehicles and terrain are beautiful and I love the fact you can drive through the day and night. Just don’t forget to turn on those lights!

Audio

Spintires: Mudrunner takes you back to nature itself while driving. There’s no distracting music, just the sound of your engine, the squelching of mud and the birds. It’s a different pace of game so I actually liked it. Normally I do like driving music but this time I didn’t feel like I missed it.

Longevity

There is a massive lifespan for Spintires: Mudrunner. There’s a lot to do and this isn’t a game you just put your foot down and drive. You actually need to plan out and think what route you’re going to take. I can’t wait for multiplayer to launch so you can get a convoy going with your friends and help out the less fortunate. The ones who didn’t plan their route out.

Conclusion

Spintires: Mudrunner is very addictive. It won’t appeal to everyone. I have to admit I was curious on this one but I wasn’t excited about it. Now I’ve played it that has changed. There is something about this game that makes you want to play just a little more and see what else you can discover. I award this game with a Thumb Culture Gold Award
