be quiet! Dark Power 14 PSU Review

Let’s be honest, the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is the unloved middle child of the PC building world. Most people pour their budget into a flashy GPU that glows like a neon sign or a CPU that could simulate the weather in real-time, only to pair them with a “budget-friendly” metal box of sparks. But when you are building a high-end rig, you aren’t just looking for power; you are looking for stability, efficiency, and, if you value your sanity, absolute silence.

Pure Watts, Total Stealth

Enter the be quiet! Dark Power 14 PSU range. There are the options of 850W, 1000W and 1200W. I was kindly sent the be quiet! Dark Power 14 1000W to test out. It is a high-end, ATX 3.1-compliant beast that refuses to make a scene. It is designed for the enthusiast who wants their PC to handle a massive overclock during the day and be a whisper-quiet workstation by night.

Design & Features

The build features a high-grade, black-finished steel chassis with a full-mesh front and a funnel-shaped air inlet. This isn’t just for looks; it’s designed to maximise airflow while keeping turbulence (and therefore noise) to a literal minimum.

Inside, things get even more impressive. This is an 80 PLUS Titanium unit, meaning it hits up to 95.5% efficiency. In human terms, that means almost all the electricity coming out of your wall goes into your components, rather than being wasted as heat. It’s packed with 105 °C-rated Japanese capacitors, which are essentially the “gold standard” for parts that won’t die on you after three years of heavy use.

All of the ports are well-presented and have a satisfying click sound when the plug is inserted correctly.

The modularity here is a dream. You get fully sleeved cables that are long enough to reach across even the most cavernous full-tower cases. But the “killer feature” is the Overclocking Key (OCK). This little jumper switch lets you toggle between a multi-rail mode (splitting the 12V power into four independent streams for safety) and a single-rail mode (one massive 83.3A pipe of power for extreme overclocking). It’s like having a “Nitro” button for your power delivery. Just be careful how you deploy it.

Performance

When you fire up a system with the Dark Power 14, your first instinct might be to check if the power cord is actually plugged in. The 135mm Silent Wings fan is virtually inaudible at low to medium loads at just 8dB. In fact, be quiet! has introduced a semi-passive mode with a dedicated 0 RPM button on the back. If you want the fan to stay completely still until things actually get hot, you have that choice.

Under heavy load, the kind where your GPU is screaming and your CPU is sweating, the Dark Power 14 remains composed. The Full Bridge + LLC + Synchronous Rectifier topology, new to this range, ensures that voltage regulation is rock solid. In my testing, the 12V rail barely budged, even during sudden power spikes from a hungry RTX 50-series card. Speaking of which, it comes with a native 12V-2×6 connector, meaning no messy adapters are required for the latest high-end graphics cards.

One of the most underrated performance aspects is the ripple suppression. Because the internal design is “wire-free” (using direct connections between circuit boards), there is very little signal interference. This results in cleaner power, which can actually help with the longevity of your motherboard and storage drives.

Conclusion

The be quiet! Dark Power 14 1000W is not a “budget” component. It is a premium investment for a premium build retailing at around £199.99. You are paying for German engineering that prioritises silence and stability over flashy gimmicks. With its 10-year warranty, this is likely a part that will outlive your next three GPUs.

If you are building a workstation where noise is the enemy, or a gaming powerhouse that demands flawless power delivery, the Dark Power 14 is the gold (or rather, Titanium) standard. It does its job so well that you will completely forget it’s there, and in the world of power supplies, that is the highest praise possible.

I give the be quiet! Dark Power 14 PSU the Thumb Culture Platinum Award!
