Developed by Springloaded and published by No More Robots, we finally have a console release of the ever-popular pixel-sim title, Let’s Build A Zoo. The game is available now across all platforms.

Not Just Another Zoo Sim!

I would not call myself a seasoned Zoo keeper, although with the number of sims around these days I could probably collect that accolade. However, Let’s Build A Zoo stands out among the many out there due to its pixelated art style. Keep reading to find out how I get on.

Gameplay

On jumping into the game you are asked to choose your avatar from a selection shown on the screen. Secondly, you are asked to name your first Zoo. If you are indecisive like me this might take more than it should. You are then taken on a tutorial for this park management similar. This shows you everything from local menus (in-game) and how to build, to looking after your animals and guests. I am not going to lie, it took me a while to get to grips with everything in my first zoo. For instance, the first time playing, I totally forgot to feed my animals (not good right?).

Choose Your Mascot!

When it comes to getting animals you can import them from all around the world. From other zoos to rescue centres. The one thing you have to do is learn what each fuzzy pixel requires. For example, what type of enclosure do they require – Grass or Sand? Also what kind of stimulation are you putting in the enclosures? These followed by enclosure sizes are extremely important. You can quickly end up with an overcrowded pen as I did with the rabbits. You also have the ability to splice species in the game, this is also another way to grow your collection and keep your guests entertained.

Get the right staff for the role!

Let’s Build A Zoo is not like other sim titles either, it has a lot more depth. Everything from food and drinks sales, to the animals themselves and employees – There is something you can customise in one shape or another. One of the most important buildings you will build, to enable the above and customisation, is the research centre. Here you can unlock all kinds of elements for your zoo.

I very rarely play sim titles, such as Let’s Build A Zoo, on a console as I always find that the controls with a keyboard and mouse are usually a lot better. Although this is an amazing title, I think I would much prefer it on PC as it does feel a little clunky at times.

Graphics & Audio

Let’s Build A Zoo is a pixel art title, however, it doesn’t just feel like your standard pixel art. It almost feels like it has been polished slightly to leave a nice smooth edge. The designs of all the in-game assets really brought the game to life. The animal assets and animations used to look great. I would be lying if I said I didn’t smile when I first saw a little rabbit hopping around the enclosure I just made.

Zoo Life

The audio in-game is extremely joyful. Tightly knitted together with all of the sound FX from the Zoo you have just created, it really creates an environment you can just relax and game in. Obviously to relax you need to make sure you keep to your schedule!

Longevity

What we have here is a game that could potentially be played over and over again. You the gamer are the only limit when it comes to how much you can get out of it. For example, if you are a gamer that easily gets bored of sim titles this might not be the game for you. However, if you love a bit of park management and ensuring everything is in tip-top condition then you could lose months in game,

Conquer The Zoo World

Final Thoughts

I was unsure what Let’s Build A Zoo would bring to the table. I know I had seen it in various places and seen others talking about it. But I didn’t know if it was the game for me. However, I really enjoyed my time in the game. There are obviously tasks and targets to hit, however unlike the usual sim titles. It didn’t feel stressful trying to hit these targets. Don’t get me wrong as your zoo grows you sometimes have to look twice to figure out what to do next. However, there were no frustrations to be had. It is a game that could be enjoyed by anyone and I highly recommend it if you need a little you time away from an FPS. I award Let’s Build A Zoo a Thumb Culture Gold Award!
