Yogscast Games, publishers of games like PlateUp!, Tales and Tactics, and Hexguardian, have announced a new game: Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers.

Yogscast Games Ante Up

Just over three weeks after releasing Hexguardian to positive reviews, Yogscast Games has announced that they’ve partnered with New Zealand-based indie studio Purple Moss Collectors to publish new deckbuilding rogue-like Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers.

It will be a deckbuilding rogue-like with Blackjack-inspired gameplay, where you’ll work your way through a tavern challenging characters and collecting new cards that will change how your playstyle develops.

Simon Byron, Managing Director of Yogscast Games, had this to say in a press release published this morning:

“From the moment we first saw it, we knew there was something very special about Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers, so I’m relieved to be able to finally talk about our partnership,” […] “It’s been a real collaboration between us and Purple Moss Collectors and a genuine honour to help Mike bring the game to life. With the demo now live, I can’t wait for players to experience Dungeon & Degenerate Gamblers’ incredible twist on a classic card game ruleset, which results in a fantastic roguelike deckbuilding adventure unlike any other. Yes, including that one.”

Byron’s last comment shows he understands that Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers‘ gameplay and presentation might invite comparisons to Balatro, a recent hit in the indie sphere. But it seems that the team is confident that Dungeons will set itself apart.

A pixelated hand holds a variety of odd cards ranging from normal playing cards to Yu-Gi-Oh style trading cards. There is an opponent opposite, and most of the felt table is taken up by poker chips, more cards, and all the accompanying gear you need to play blackjack.
The new art update has a nice level of polish to it that matches the game’s tone.

Dungeons, Degenerates, and New Demos

Purple Moss Collectors and Yogscast Games have released a new demo alongside the announcement, showcasing an overhauled art-style and soundtrack. Mike of Purple Moss Collectors elaborated in a Steam page update:

“We have signed a publishing agreement with Yogscast Games who will be partnering with us to launch Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers later this year! We will still remain in full control of the game’s direction but partnering with Yogscast Games has enabled us to overhaul the art in game as well as freeing up additional time by taking on some of the responsibilities we would have otherwise needed to handle ourselves. They also bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the table.”

That knowledge and experience could trace itself to Aces & Adventures, a deckbuilding RPG released last year. Yogscast Games’ first foray into deck-builders, the game was well-received and has benefited from ongoing support since launch.

As for Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers, the game’s new art style, provided by Yogscast artists Nina-Serena, Harry, and Jack, shows how the game is already benefiting from the resources that an established publisher like Yogscast Games can leverage.

Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers‘ release date has yet to be announced, but a demo is available on Steam here.
