Supermoves, developed and published by Finland-based Makea Games, brings the exhilarating world of parkour to life with a variety of game modes, multiplayer action, and a powerful level creator. Similar to the outstanding Mirror’s Edge, minus the combat, this game promises fast-paced movement, creativity, and thrilling gameplay, making it a unique addition to the parkour genre.
Everyone Loves A Bit Of Parkour!
Supermoves is available on Steam for £12.79 at the time of writing and is out now. For an extra £4.29 you can buy the deluxe version that includes some holographic cosmetics as well as the Supermoves original soundtrack.
Gameplay
Supermoves offers a range of modes, from single-player career to 40-player online multiplayer races and challenges. The core of the game, being parkour, revolves around fluid movement—running, jumping, sliding, and bouncing between walls in dynamic environments.
To add to the mix, you can play Supermoves in either first or third person. I preferred it in first person as it was really quite immersive while in third person it looked a bit clunky as your character’s animations sometimes jar a little.
Through the children’s activity centre tutorial, the controls are simple to learn and feel responsive. You can use keyboard and mouse if you prefer however I found using my controller was a lot easier. Very soon you are sliding through gaps, wall-running and bouncing from surface to surface to make a fast ascent. There is a list of Supermoves that are used as specials in order to gain a boost during your play. These range from front and backflips, side leaps as well as tightrope acrobatics. Each has a perk such as freezing balance meters or jumping further in the air and ultimately when used correctly give you an advantage.
Coz I’m free, free runnin’
Each location in the career mode has several goals to complete to unlock the next city or tournament. There is a real Tony Hawks vibe to the whole setup, with a variety of moves to perform or positions to finish that show as complete via a line through them. Oh, and there are also letters to find that spell “super” as well as a hidden tape! Look out for the daily and weekly challenges to also gain some extra XP to help you unlock further cosmetics.
The areas that you get to parkour in are really varied and although daunting at first, it is easy to begin stringing moves together as you work out the fastest way around the courses.
From competing in Florida where you play levels with a school and fun park theme, it doesn’t take long for the ante to up. You are soon traversing skyscrapers in a flooded city, grinding ropes at an outdoor gig, and taking part in all-out action within huge stadiums. Each course feels unique and although the controls and movement do not change, it is all about perfecting your run in more and more challenging environments. Ultimately you want those golden cosmetics and trophies! Be warned though, the AI is not easy to beat and your competitors will use every shortcut they can to stay in front.
Multiplayer is online and can be up to 40 players. Here you take part in 8 game modes:
- Rising Tide – Where you need to climb up as high as possible and get to the finish line while the ground below you rises.
- Sprint & Circuit Modes – Either a race to the finish or several laps around.
- Bomb Tag – Pass the bomb on before it explodes.
- Loot Mode – Hunt for collectibles and be the first to get the total required.
- Obstacle Course – Showcase your parkour skills
- Battle Royale & Tournament Mode – Last man standing or a leader board based on points.
Sadly, the lobbies online remain empty. I had a bounce around in my own tournament, and the modes and courses were genuinely fun, however on your own it isn’t. Although I did win each round, apart from bomb tag.
There is a powerful level creator where you can build the parkour course of your dreams. It is very easy to dive into, and with a vast amount of objects to place, locations to choose from, and devilish gaps to think up, the sky is the limit. All of your creations can then be played, Fall Guys-esque, online by others via the “Explore” area of the main menu. There are currently 4 pages worth of custom-made maps.
Graphics & Audio
Supermoves plays fast and for that reason, you do not always have time to take in the glory of what is surrounding you. The textures for the materials, i.e. metal, wood, brick, padding, etc., all look realistic as you traverse them and ultimately the framerate is smooth. The environments and lighting are all well done, as are the weather effects. While the character creation found in the “Locker” area is a bit basic, again you do not have time when out there to observe it all until you can breathe again at the end.
The soundtrack by Olli Heino (available on the deluxe edition) is a combination of rock & synth. No Tony Hawks punk tracks here sadly. The high-energy music keeps you motivated during races and adds to the adrenalin as you try and beat your opponents. The sound effects of jumping, leaping, grinding and traversing obstacles all blend in nicely.
Longevity
The single-player campaign can be tricky at times, and due to the quick nature of each course, you will find yourself having many-a-play through. I found myself quite addicted to it, maybe because this is not a typical game and feels a lot more unique. With multiplayer and a level editor, you can spend a huge amount of time playing with friends as well as playing other peoples’ creations. If anyone is online.
Final Thoughts
Supermoves is a great game. There are areas where it could be polished a bit more, however, the quick-paced nature of throwing yourself from one platform to another is really exciting and certainly gives you a buzz. The arcade-feel and adrenalin that pumps as you calculate your next death-defying leap or massive miscalculation certainly keep you on your toes. I really hope that other gamers see how much fun this game is and begin hosting multiplayer lobbies. Supermoves deserves recognition!
I award Supermoves the Thumb Culture Gold Award!
