The RIG Headset range from Nacon has always been about pushing boundaries. That is exactly what they are trying to do with the RIG 900 MAX HS headset. We were lucky enough to be sent a set to try out. So we unboxed it, fired up the headset, and away we went.

Big RIG

So, what do you look for in a headset? Is comfort the most important factor, or do you prefer to have deep, rich bass notes? Well, we will try to let you know just what makes the RIG 900 MAX HS worth your time.

Design

The RIG 900 MAX HS features the same aesthetic as the majority of the RIG headset line-up. A minimalist but futuristic headband featuring cut-out sections. As well as the lift-to-mute microphone. It looks like something out of Minority Report. Coming in a black colourway, the headset features a nice, comfortable set of earcups. As well as a suspension band design, so your head never comes into direct contact with the steel headband.

Sitting pretty

In the box is something neat, though. A nice charging base station. This doubles as a place to keep your headset as well as a charger. Another cool feature is that you can plug the USB dongle straight into the base, keeping the wireless range down as much as possible. Don’t get me wrong this isn’t essential though. If you venture away from your desk, the RIG 900 MAX HS has a range of around 10 metres before the audio starts getting fuzzy.

Features

So what makes the headset tick? Well, a set of 40mm drivers pushing out a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz. Basically, meaning that there is a lot of range with this headset. Whilst it may not be as big of a range as some other headsets on the market, it’s still going to give you a decent amount of clarity. Whether that’s the loud booms of a grenade going off nearby, or whether you just want to listen to some nice classical music. It all sounds good using the RIG 900 MAX HS.

The USB dongle features multi-platform wireless technology. Giving you both a low-latency 2.4 GHz connection as well as a Bluetooth connection. Meaning you never have to miss that important phone call again. With the super clear microphone gives whoever you are speaking to the clarity of voice.

You can also combine the Bluetooth connection with the 900 MAX Navigator App. Giving you full control to change the EQ options for different game genres. As well as changing up the mic sensitivity to ensure that even when playing the most intense of gaming sessions.

Sound Quality

As with all the headsets I try I always start with the music test. After all, they may be a gaming headset but I will still listen to music when sitting on my computer! Firing up the John Williams playlist as always, the RIG 900 MAX HS gave a decent clarity to all the instruments in the orchestra. Then onto something with a bit more tempo, some nice RnB. Unfortunately, the bass on the headset was a little flat, even after I played around with the Navigator App. It wasn’t bad, but it also wasn’t great.

That invisible dust strikes again!

After I’d spent a good hour listening to music, I fired up a couple of games. I usually pick a few games to try these out on, and Call of Duty was first up. The headset was able to give me spatial awareness to make sure that I didn’t get flanked or caught from behind. I then always fire up a racing game just to check the loudness. Next I loaded up F1 2024. Now, when I say that the headset handles loud noises incredibly well, I mean it. At no point was I worried about losing any part of my hearing, and it was nice and clear. Even the radio message from my pits was clear and crisp.

Final Thoughts

The RIG 900 MAX HS is a good headset. Is it worth its hefty £215 price tag? Personally, probably not. However, if you’re looking to upgrade and this is within your budget, the RIG offering should be high on your radar.

With unique aesthetics and a great soundscape for gaming, the RIG 900 MAX HS receives the Thumb Culture Gold Award.
