It’s Razer time again, this time we have the Wolverine V3 Pro controller. On paper this controller sounds incredible, but does it actually live up to it’s own hype? We were lucky enough to get hold of one of the controllers on release and have been playing with it for the last couple of weeks.

This Wolverine Shows Its Claws

So come with us as we dive into the specs that make this controller worth every penny of it’s £199.99 price tag.

Design

Straight out of the box, you can tell that the Wolverine V3 Pro is made of premium materials. Unzipping the included carry case you are greeted with the controller, a USB cable, 2 spare thumbsticks and the USB Bluetooth Dongle. Weighing a generous 304g, the controller let’s you know that it’s there without causing any strain.

Being posed as a controller for the Xbox and PC, the Wolverine V3 Pro has the traditional Xbox layout with thumbsticks in an asymmetrical position and the standard trigger and bumper combination.

However, there’s some extra flair when you flip the controller over. On the rear of the controller, you have four paddles built into the handles. Not to mention the two clear grip bumpers on the top of the controller. Rounding off the extra bits on the back with two switches for activating the Razer Pro Hypertriggers. Giving those triggers an instant response and switching from a longer trigger pull for a shorter more mouse click-esque feel.

Features

You’ve probably guessed from the design section above that there are plenty of features on the Wolverine V3 Pro controller. Let’s dive a bit deeper and find out what’s really going on beneath that jet-black fascia.

The thumbsticks seem a great place to start. With Hall Effect thumbsticks, the controller brings a higher accuracy than standard thumbsticks. As well as being more durable thanks to the anti-friction rings and the materials used on the controller. Included in the carry case are two different thumbsticks that can be snapped into place easily. A Shorter cap lends itself to a faster reaction time and a taller one gives a bit more precision to your movements.

Now let’s talk about buttons. The mecha-tactile action buttons give quicker inputs that feel great to press. The floating d-pad had great tactile feedback too.

My favourite part of the controller is how simple it is to remap one of the extra buttons. Simply hold the action button below the share button, then press the button you want to map as well as what you want to map. A few flashes of the Razer logo and its done. It’s a great feature that meant I could do trial and error with what I wanted the back paddles as, all whilst still in game! I ended up having the crouch and jump buttons on the right side for playing Call of Duty. Just in case you were wondering.

Compatibility

You would be remiss to believe that the Wolverine V3 Pro is a one-trick pony. But believe me, it’s got a few tricks up its sleeve.

Using the included USB Type-A Dongle, you get an ultra-low latency 2.4 GHz connection. However, plug the USB cable into a PC and you get a special Tournament Mode, enabling a 1000Hz polling rate using a keyboard shortcut. Giving the Wolverine V3 Pro more precise movement for accuracy in those competitive situations.

You can also download an app from the Windows Store to give even greater customisation to the Wolverine V3 Pro. Opening up the ability to add a sensitivity clutch to your thumbsticks allows you to lower the sensitivity in those high-stakes moments. You can edit the button layout directly in the app as well as change the vibration strength.

Final Thoughts

Even with its high price point, the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro controller holds its own against other controllers in the market. Whether that be the PlayStation DualSense Edge, the Xbox Elite 2 or a Scuff controller. Each has its own merits, but the Razer offering seems to get things just about right.

This controller is my go-to, even thought I have a whole host of other top-quality controllers from companies such as Nacon and Thrustmaster. The Razer controller just feels right in my hands. Add to that the quick and easy method of assigning the extra buttons, it is just pure elegance.

The Razer Wolverine V3 Pro controller receives the Thumb Culture Gold Award. Only missing out on our highest achievement due to its price and removing it from the everyday budget.
