Sweet Home – The Original Resident Evil

Now for day 6 in our 31 Days of Halloween, we go old school and head to the Famicom for Sweet Home. A little survival horror action game that not many people know about.

As usual, if you enjoyed this then why not check out some more entries in our 31 Days of Halloween here. You can also check out what the rest of the Thumb Culture team are up to on our social media.

Impressive for 1989.

You ask any gamer about survival horror and nine times out of ten the answer you hear will be Resident Evil. Little do them gamers know that Resident Evil took huge inspiration from Sweet Home. Some will say that Sweet Home is the grandfather of the survival horror franchise.

Actually, the game itself has based on a Japanese movie of the same name. The plot centers around a group of five filmmakers that go exploring in an old abandoned mansion. Little do they know is that the mansion is filled with demons and supernatural forces.

The game relies on your wits and keen puzzle solving to get you through the old place. Along with inventory management and a turn-based battle system to fight the forces of darkness. You will need all the help you can get. There are many traps throughout the mansions. Which rely on quick-time events.

The choice is yours whether to go alone on your adventure or go as a full party. But the risk with taking a full party of characters is that if one member dies then they stay dead. It may very well be the first game with permadeath as that character stays dead for the remainder of the game.

If you’ve never played Sweet Home then I highly recommend that you do.
