Lil Gator Game: Gator of the Year – Playstation 5 Review

Colorful illustration of a joyful cartoon alligator in a vibrant playground with animal friends. "Lil Gator Game: Gator of the Year Edition" text is prominent.

After first diving into our games libraries in 2022, Lil Gator Game is back in the Gator of the Year edition which includes the main game and the In the Dark DLC.

Megawobble’s cozy family adventure bubbled to the surface of the Playstation store for a £17.49 for PS Plus members or for £24.99 for non-members.

Adventure is this way Lil Gator!

The start of a very big adventure for a very little gator

Gameplay

Making friends and going on adventures is the name of the game in Lil Gator Game. After your sister has finally came home from school, all you want to do is play games like the good old days. Unfortunately for you, she’s still got school work coming out of her ears (do alligators have those?) and no time to play.

From that little story set up, Lil Gator Game rolls straight into the bulk of the story. Explore an open world island full of friends, paper enemies and nostalgia to build the best adventure ever that will even have your sister abandoning her laptop.

Give me a stick so I can start whacking

The story is cute and the gameplay is simple as you run, climb, swim and glide across the world to complete quests. As you complete them, you unlock the chance to build another part of your home base that is the main setting for the adventure the Lil Gator is preparing for his sister.

Everything is very simple which means any age of gamer can pick it up. It’s the perfect first game for younger players and is a nice break from the difficulty of modern day AAA releases for the veterans.

In the Dark DLC

The In The Dark DLC comes included in the Gator of the Year edition and doubles the size of the game. There’s an all new map to explore as well as new friends and a new story to uncover. The same cosy vibe is consistent throughout and takes the elements we’ve already learned from the main game and pushes them just that little bit further.

Things are starting to get a little spooky

Graphics & Audio

Lil Gator Game’s graphics perfectly reflect the age of the Lil Gator themself. Everything feels cutesy, even the ‘enemies’ that you have to fight. In the same way the game reflects the age of the Lil Gator, it also feels like the areas could easily be drawn by a child making up a story.

Hang it on the fridge

The music and general background noise amplifies these cozy vibes, making it really easy to lose track of time as you beat paper monsters and try to make friends with other people on your island.

Longevity

As mentioned, switching off and exploring in this game is easy and you can sink a fair few hours into it. Add to that the new DLC which doubles the size of the map and there’s plenty of space to explore. However, it’s a bit of an odd sitution. Is this game easy to turn off to? Absolutely. In fact, that is the main reason I’ve sank so much time into this game. That being said, it also gets pretty old pretty quickly. Lil Gator Game is so basic in its game play that I, personally, found my mind wandering to other things. In short bursts, Lil Gator Game is perfect however it isn’t really made for long gaming sessions.

Cole Phelps is that you?

Additionally, after finishing Lil Gator Game and the accompanying DLC, there isn’t much replayability. This isn’t really a bad thing as a game doesn’t have to have hundreds of playthroughs for it to be good. However, as a short game – around 3ish hours to do everything – it might be enough to turn people away.

Final Thoughts

Lil Gator Game is a cute little experience that would fit well into the library of any cozy gamer. The story is super easy to follow and doesn’t get weighed down by trying to do too much. That being said, it didn’t blow me out of the water either. It’s a short game that you either blast through in one sitting or play in short bursts because there simply isn’t a lot to keep you captivated.

Is it a bad game? Definitely not. As I say, this is definitely a contender for a decent addition to a cozy library. However when I finally sat down and just played through the story it only took me around 5 hours to do everything. Is that enough for the £20 price point? I don’t think so when there’s so little replayability.

Ultimately I have to give Lil Gator Game the Thumb Culture Silver Award. It’s cute, it’s easy but it isn’t much more than that.
