I am Jesus Christ – PC Review

There are sandy dunes and spikey desert plants scattered about. Above this is a sunrise full of clouds. A bright light beams through the middle, highlighting Jesus Christ as he floats upwards, hands outstretched. The text reads 'I Am Jesus Christ' in orange and yellow gradient.

I won’t lie, but I honestly did not expect to be reviewing a game like this, and a sim too. That is right I am checking out I Am Jesus Christ, created by Space Boat Studios, and thanks to them. We will step into the sandals of the messiah himself, Jesus. You can grab this right now on Steam for £11.39.

“I am the light of the world” (John 8:12)

And he was born in a manger.

Gameplay

I Am Jesus Christ will let us experience the New Testament as the titular character, as he journeys the Middle East performing miracles. Some of the miracles you will perform consist of healing the lame, guiding fish, walking on water, and… this shocked me, exorcisms. All of these play out in little mini-games for you to play, like guiding a symbol while avoiding a serpent. While another had me use my mouse cursor to guide some fish to a boat. Besides the miracles you do on the main story there are small side quests that you are able to do as well. Although they are all roughly the same miracles repeated.

Was pretty cool playing as Jesus, while he dealt with demons.

Other than that, you can collect various codex entries to learn passages from the Bible or Historical pieces of the time. Another task for you, comes from a man who will test your knowledge on stories right from the Bible itself, I actually was impressed with how many I got right. A small feature is Jesus’s Divine Sight, that will help in locating interact-able objects or people. It uses Faith which is earned by playing or praying, although I never had a problem by just playing.

Graphics & Audio

These simulator games follow a lot of the same gameplay styles, and the visuals are no exception. Low detail textures and boxy animation. However for a change, they seemed to put some effort into making areas feel alive and populated, and the heavenly puzzle areas are pretty well-designed and good-looking. The music and sound effects are also pretty decent. A.I. was used to do the voice acting in game, which they state on their steam page.

This is just a random shot, unless you wish to see more desert.

Longevity

I Am Jesus Christ could be finished within a little over an afternoon, with me doing everything the game had to offer in 6 hours. A lot of the side stuff are just small miracles that are scattered around or collecting the aforementioned codex’s.

Sadly no rewards for filling it all in, kinda more of a check sheet.

Final Thoughts

Overall it was not that bad, and comes across as rather educational. I would have loved to have played this while in R.E. at high school. As someone who doesn’t follow an any religion, so I could not say if the game follows the New Testament correctly. But ignoring the odd A.I. voices and some uncanny valley looking models, I Am Jesus Christ is enjoyable. Gameplay is fun and simple, and the short mini-games help break up the dialogue between quests.

I wouldn’t mind seeing other sims games tell the story of other religious stories, like Muhammed, Dalai Lama, or others from the Bible itself. So I will be giving it the Thumb Culture Silver Award.
