Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping is an Adventure game made by Happy Broccoli Games. This game is a sequel to Duck Detective: The Secret Salami which you can read our review of here. I honestly didn’t expect to get so absorbed and invested into a game that looks simplistic, yet fun. Heck, having the option to just quack whenever I want honestly gave this game a wing up.
By my DeDucktion, you will all be getting this game
Releasing tomorrow (23rd May) on Steam, let’s see if this game is all it’s quacked up to be. Spoilers, it is.
Gameplay
The game starts you as Duck Detective. In the middle of a depressive spiral, we learn how to play the game. Collecting words from things around the room to better solve deducktions. Once you solve your first one, you’ll start to understand the rules of the game. Although we get to do one more deducktion before the real game starts. Throughout your adventure, you’ll meet suspects that you’ll need label and meet for the events ahead.
Besides that, there’ll be clues and evidence you’ll come across. There aren’t any penalties for talking to others about evidence or other suspects, so talk to everyone! To be honest, this is a great way to get kids or others into point and click games. Not only is it funny, but entertaining too with the puns and jokes they slide in. Even the ability to quack on demand is wonderful.
Graphics and Audio
The graphics give me a vibe of Paper Mario with it’s paper-like appearance and 3d backgrounds. Because of this combination, it’s oddly appealing and satisfying to my mind. Whilst some may not like this art style this game is the literal meaning of “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover.” Sure, the movement of the characters are still, but it still has life behind their eyes. The moment you can use the magnifying glass on objects and people, you’ll see the finer details of subject. I didn’t even know the character Freddy was wearing glasses until I used the magnifying glass!
Now onto the audio. The OST is very well made. The events seamlessly immersed me with the in-game events. Never once was my attention break from the seriousness of the moment.
Longevity
If you’re like me, you can easily finish Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping in one sitting, or roughly two hours. Due to the witty writing and the level of difficulty being just right, I never stopped playing. I honestly wish there was more to it. This scratched my Sam n’ Max itch that I’ve had for the longest time. Sure, it’s a band-aid, but it’s the one that shows that this game genre isn’t dead.
Final Thoughts
My time with Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping was both amazing but short. I’m glad that Happy Broccoli Games have now made two Duck Detective games and I’m hopeful there will be more. I just wish there was more of this sequel just like there are slices of bread in a bag.
Hopefully this review would convince people to get this game and start a cult following. Because a game like this should be treasured before it flies south for the winter!
I give Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping the Thumb Culture Platinum Award.
