Roccat Vulcan 121 Aimo Gaming Keyboard Review

With all that extra time you may all of a sudden have sitting in your house, perhaps now could be a good time to take a look at those PC upgrades that you have never got around to. Roccat kindly sent me a Vulcan 121 Aimo gaming keyboard a few weeks ago to test and wow it really is something else!

Striking illumination is a staple of Roccat.

On first looks, the mechanical gaming keyboard looks striking as it comes out of the box, set on its dark anodized aluminium plate with its black keys seemingly hovering in the air as they sit on the clear Titan Tactile Switches below. The magnetic palm rest that connects onto the bottom of the keyboard is a lovely touch and it very comfortable when using the keyboard for long durations.

The Vulcan 121 Aimo comes fully loaded with all of the high-class features that you would expect from Roccat that goes into their Aimo intelligent lighting range. These include the stunning illumination effects that light the keys in any colour that you desire, 16.8m shades to be specific, as well as a selection of animated effects such as breathing, ripple and snake that are affected when you press keys. On the top right of the keyboard, you will find media keys that give you access to quick functions such as sound mute, volume and key brightness, all of which can be controlled using the handy dial.

Once more, the ability to assign keys to particular functions including macros is available via the awesome Roccat Swarm software. Here you will find preset collections for a range of games such as Battlefield, Counter-Strike, Destiny, etc that you can load in and remap to your heart’s content. With the onboard 512kb memory along with the 1000Hz polling rate, you will have no latency excuses here! Profiles can be stored and recalled at the stroke of a button.

Getting back to the keys themselves, the heart of any keyboard, they feel amazingly responsive thanks to the Titan Tactile Switches. Every keystroke is consistent thanks to the mechanics and firmware working in tandem, something that Roccat is proud about. Each key has a total travel distance of 3.6mm and an actuation point of 1.8mm, loosely comparable with the Cherry MX brown switches that allow travel of 4mm and actuate at 2mm. Being a frameless keyboard you would expect the possibility of some wobble in the key when pressed, however, there was no evidence of this as the dustproof sturdy transparent housing that contains both the Titan Tactile Switch and the long-lasting LED stopped any of it from occurring.

Overall, the Roccat Vulcan 121 Aimo gaming keyboard is lovely to use. It is ergonomically comfortable on your hands, practical and looks fantastic! Roccat retail the mechanical marvel at around £150, but shop around and you will find it for slightly less. Check out the official video below for more angles!
