When you get contacted by the team at Nacon about their newest headset, the RIG R5 Spear Pro HS, you just have to listen. With a brand-new look, we just couldn’t resist, and here we are a few weeks later. After extensive testing, we’re ready to deliver our thoughts and let you know whether this headset should be top of your Christmas list or not.
New RIG, Same Sound
Now, before we get too far into this review, let’s talk about the price point. At less than £70, this shocked me, especially sitting through the marketing presentation and hearing a lot of buzzwords. I was waiting for a much higher price point. So now that my flabber has been ghasted, let’s jump into the main section of this review.
Design Features
Straight away, you might notice something with the RIG R5 Spear Pro HS, it’s a wired headset. Not too big of an issue, especially as it’s licensed for the PlayStation 5. Just plug it straight into the controller and you’re off. No battery to keep charged, or Bluetooth adapter to plug in, just simple old school plug and play.
Having been built for competitive gaming, the lightweight frame and comfortable headband and ear cushions are divine. You will no doubt be spending a lot of time with this headset on your head, and the comfort is unreal. Being a competitive gaming headset can only mean one thing, though. It has been tuned for first-person shooters, boosting the sound in the upper mid-range, enhancing those important footsteps and reloads.
Featuring a set of 40mm graphene drivers, this headset delivers great audio with practically zero harmonic distortion. You get a richer sound that drags you into the immersion. On top of that, you get a great frequency response of 20 Hz through to a whopping 40 kHz. All of this combines to give you a great audio reproduction across the entire audio spectrum. The RIG R5 Spear Pro HS is also optimised for the PlayStation 5’s Tempest 3D Audio, giving it another arrow in its quiver.
Customisation
Whilst you can’t customise everything on the headset, you can use the snap+lock magnetic customisation to swap the side plates and the ear cushions. Simply give them a little tug and off they come. Additional mod plates are coming soon, so look forward to some themed options in the future.
With a customisable headset, you need to be able to be heard clearly. Now, this headset comes with a broadcast-grade microphone with a great frequency range, meaning you can be heard loud and clear. If you need to shut it off quickly, use the flip-to-mute; it’s nice and easy, which is always a bonus when it comes to using a microphone. With its in-line volume switch, you can control the volume. Aside from that, it’s all just straight out of the box.
Playing the new Battlefield 6 RedSec with the RIG R5 Spear Pro HS has been great. Being able to accurately locate where the other players are gives you an advantage against someone with a rubbish headset. What makes it even better are the small details. Yes footsteps are fun, but hearing them reload, or even just shuffling around opening chests; this is what gives you the upper hand. Burst through a door when they are reloading and it’s an instant kill.
Final Thoughts
So, should you be picking up this headset? It’s a resounding yes from me. At the price point, it’s a great option when it comes to both those on a budget, but also those of you looking for something that sounds great.
Don’t sleep on this headset…
The RIG R5 Spear Pro HS gets the Thumb Culture Gold Award.
