Sunlight’s Krillbite Studio Chats To Thumb Culture

If you're a fan of narrative-driven, atmospheric experiences then you're going to love Krillbite Studio's Sunlight, which was released on Steam earlier this month. Here at Thumb Culture, we've had the chance to review Sunlight and chat to the game's designer and writer about the inspiration behind it. Sunlight is a lovingly-crafted short experience from the award-winning Norwegian studio. Inspired by the work of famous Norwegian artist Edvard Munch, Sunlight takes place in an atmospheric and stunning forest. Players explore their surroundings in first person as the story unfurls around them through a voiceover from the trees. It's visually intriguing from the start, but its when the audio kicks in and the storytelling begins that things really start to get interesting! With lush ...

Devour, by indie devs Straight Back Games, is a co-op survival horror game that has you attempting to stop a possessed cult leader called Anna before she drags you to hell.  Available on PC and with no two playthroughs being quite the same, are you up for the challenge? Devour - Holy Forking Shirtballs! Goat sacrifice, check.  Torch, check.  Spare underwear, double-check.  Let's do this... Gameplay Ok before I go completely out of my comfort zone here are some cool facts about the devs that made Devour. Chicken Police: Paint it RED! Review – What the Cluck!?!

Back in November 2020, the gaming community was preoccupied with the release of both next-gen consoles and the release of various AAA titles. The consequences of this being that an absolute gem of an indie title didn't register on many people's radar. Chicken Police: Paint it RED! is the first game from new devs The Wild Gentlemen and published by HandyGames. The Wild Gentlemen team is made up from a talented group of developers who have worked on such classics as the Witcher 3, Call of Duty WWII and the Crysis series. Chicken Police: Paint it RED! is described by the Budapest based team as an "Orwellesque Buddycop Noir Adventure". LA Noire on LSD would be a better description (incidentally if Noire is your thing check out our LA Noire review here ). Chicken Police: Paint It RED! - Fow...

Helheim Hassle Review – To Helheim And Back

Helheim Hassle is a puzzle/platform game originally released in late 2020. It was developed and published by Perfectly Paranormal, the team behind Manual Samuel. You play as Bjørn, a Viking who shies away from violence and confrontation. After a freak accident and a botched resurrection, Bjørn joins Pesto, a being from human hell, on a quest to collect Satan's new sword from Hel. In return for his assistance, Bjørn gets Pesto to agree to try and help him stay in Helheim. To Helheim and back again. Pleasure or hassle? We're only in January, sure, but Helheim Hassle is my favourite game of the year so far. What have you played so far in 2021? Are you planning to add this to your list? Let us know in the comments. Gameplay The main mechanic in Helheim Hassle centres around Bjørn and h...

Animal Farm is a novel written by George Orwell. First published in 1945 the book tells the story of a group of animals on a farm who grow tired of being mistreated by the farmer. Hoping to free themselves from slavery to the humans, the pigs incite a rebellion with the other animals, citing that all animals are equal. The pigs eventually come to rule over the rest of the farm, claiming some animals are more equal than others. The story is a political satire and allegory of the corrupted socialism found in the USSR under Stalin. It's an animal eat animal world on Orwell's Animal Farm Orwell's Animal Farm is a video game adaptation of the novella. Gears 5 Hivebusters DLC Review – Busting Makes Me Feel Good

It is the year 2020... A year where Microsoft struggled to really demonstrate why their machine was the most powerful on the market. Yet they seemed to release, with zero fanfare, one of the most gorgeous games I've seen. Yet they've finally done it with Gears 5 Hivebusters. Gears 5 Hivebusters is a free (well on Game Pass) DLC for Gears 5 that is a 3-hour origin story of Scorpio Team. The team was first introduced in Gears 5's sorely underrated Escape mode. Whilst it's only a small, linear campaign, it's packed with a lot of character and some really impressive visuals. Typical Scorpio... Blowing up swarm with a deadly gas... The Escape mode in Gears 5 was effectively the act of poisoning a Swarm nest. It was then a race against the clock, and the various antagonists, as you make...

Ghostanoid Review – Another Brick In The Wall?

So here we are, a new brick breaker. This one is Ghostanoid from developers Qplaze (Real Blockcraft, Galaxy Warfighter) and publishers JoyBits (Doodle God, Commando). The game will release on Nintendo Switch on January 21st 2021. Still weird typing 2021 instead of 2020. Ghostanoid - Another Brick In The Wall? Let's take a look and see what I think of Ghostanoid. Will it be a smash hit for the Switch? Or just another brick in the wall? Gameplay Ghostanoid has gameplay akin to the classic brick breaker Arkanoid. There's a certain trick to getting through the levels as quick as possible and that's to hit the ghosts by bouncing balls into them as you can see on the levels as below. Each level has slightly more blocks (or furniture in the case of this game) that you have to break bef...

Top 20 EA Games Of The 20th Century Part 1 – 1986-1993

Oh, hello there.  You've caught me reminiscing about EA before they became one of the most successful, and controversial video game companies in the world.  So, I thought I would compile a list of my Top 20 EA Games Of The 20th Century.  There was a time when they were more commonly known as Electronic Arts, than the apathetic acronym we now know them as.  It was the spring of 1982 when former Apple employee Trip Hawkins founded the company on a budget of $200,000.  EA now generates a huge $5.5 billion annually through games, franchises, online content, studio acquisitions, and various partnerships.  This makes them the second most successful video game company outside of Japan, second only to Activision Blizzard. It Wasn't Always Sports And Star Wars You Know! Trip stayed with the compa...
